Merton Schools’ DPO leading the way in Data Protection
Derek Crabtree, Schools’ ICT Support Manager and DPO for schools in the London Borough of Merton, has been nominated for various awards in recognition of his work to support schools across the Borough in complying with the new data protection laws in the UK.
I’m really delighted to have even been nominated, it is really great that both my team and our schools are being recognised for our efforts in meeting the challenges of complying with the GDPR in the education sector.Derek Crabtree, DPO for Schools, London Borough of Merton
Leading up to the implementation of the GDPR last May, Derek grew very concerned about the lack of support and funding for schools in complying with the new regulation. Schools reported being approached by numerous consultants and companies looking to exploit the sector and gain access to public funds.
With the help of LGfL, Merton’s broadband provider, Derek and his team were able to create a Service Level Agreement for the schools they work with. Derek chose to use GDPRiS to help him centrally monitor and manage data protection. Schools in Merton are now confident that they are able to meet and quite possibly exceed the requirements of the GDPR and DPA2018.
